Nowadays, there are a lot of job opportunities for dental hygienists. There are numerous prospects which are extremely encouraging for certain areas and may be helpful for someone who is seeking a dental hygienist career.

Opportunities for dental hygienists are often rewarding as they can work in a clinical environment and they get paid practically well. Those who were able to take a 4 year course, Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s degree in a Dental Hygienist school may choose a career as a sales representative, teacher, researcher or an administrator.

The following are some opportunities for dental hygienists in different sectors:

Public Sector

There are not that many opportunities for dental hygienists in the public sector but they offer a good compensation and career advancement opportunities as they can pursue a career in clinical, education, or in a state legislature. Their target is working in preventive care to rural homes and poor communities.

To be able to get a job opportunity in a public sector you need to at least earn a Bachelor’s degree.

Private Sector

A lot of private sector jobs in the office are very much available for dental hygienists and they pay a lot compare to the public sector. At the same time, they are also hiring dental hygienists who have an Associate’s degree.

Dental hygienists have may choices at their disposal: to work in the outpatient care centers, general medical and surgical hospitals are also available but very limited. If you are able to get the job, you are able to get the same salary for jobs that are currently in the market. Also, if you are looking for an immediate job then you might not want to pursue your application because it may take time before you can get a job in this kind of setting.

Other opportunities for dental hygienists such as teaching is expected to grow in the next coming years because there are a lot of demands for professionals in dental care. At the same time, several jobs await for administrative and management for dental hygienists in the public and private sector. A lot of job opportunities in research as well, are also available but you need to have a Bachelor’s degree in order to apply.

Opportunities for dental hygienists will vary depending on the career path that you want, at the same time; you need to consider the education that you will take. Like for example, for teaching, research and hospital you need to earn a Bachelor’s degree. Unlike at some clinics, they can accept someone with an Associate’s Degree.

Going to online schools is becoming a trendy way for those who already have a job and wants to have a chance to earn another degree at their own pace. Online Dental Hygienist schools are becoming more and more available for those people who would like to be in a dental profession who is thinking of getting an Associate’s degree, a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree.

One advantage of an online dental hygienist school is that it offers more variety degree programs. The tuitions fees are also much cheaper than traditional schools. In online dental hygienist schools, you do not have to attend and sit in classrooms, or you need to wake up early to go to work for travel time. If there are storms and other bad weather conditions, you can complete your assignments on time. You can also choose your schedule and if you have a current work this will be much easier for you. Online dental hygienist schools do not provide strict schedules for completing assignments so this will be easier for you to balance your schedule. Another advantage for online dental hygienist schools is that students may earn college credits online and this is good for those students who have to work for summer jobs.

But you also have to consider a few disadvantages in enrolling to online dental hygienist schools. In going to dental hygienist online schools, there is a lack of supervision for students. So you would need to be more focused and responsible on your assignments. In some cases, if you are not computer literate, then an online school may be difficult for you. Other online universities offer financial aid but if you have other debts that you are currently paying then this is not a right choice because it’s very hard for you to give attention to your studies if a collections representative is calling you every day.

Online dental hygienists schools are very much available online and you can already scout for the top schools that provide programs that would suit your needs. At the same time, weigh your options if you would really want to enroll online or in a traditional school. A traditional school provides interaction in a classroom setting and promotes open ideas whereas an online school will facilitate a convenient way of transferring pertinent information.

There might be an absence on communication for online dental hygienist schools but it will give you more flexibility to balance everything in your life.

Have you heard about Dental Hygienists? What does a Dental Hygienist do? How are they different from Dentists?

A Dental Hygienist assists Dentists in making sure that patients are taken care of. They focus on dental care and prevention. They are also responsible for rolling out techniques in oral hygiene such as informing patients how to select toothbrushes or explaining the relationship between diet and oral health and also to let them know how to brush and floss their teeth.

One of the qualities required for a dental hygienists is being able to multitask as they will be examining teeth, take and develop dental x-rays, apply fluoride and many more. Aside from that they should be able to work well with the members of the public all day and must maintain a manner of concern and service to others.

The difference between dental hygienist work and a dentist is that dental hygienists use different tools to complete their task while dentists use a variety of equipment which includes x-ray and other machines. Aside from that, dentists may employ and supervise dental hygienists. In addition, most dentists own their own business and they work with a small staff. On the other hand, dental hygienists work to help make a diagnosis and prepare diagnostic tests for dentists.

In some states, dental hygienist are allowed to oversee anesthetics using syringes, carve filling materials, temporary fillings, periodontal dressing, remove sutures, smooth and polish metal restorations and some other tasks that usually a dentist would do. The will also help patients who are having a surgery and orthodontic treatment and other medical conditions in general.

An advantage of a dental hygienist work is the flexibility in schedule. There are a lot of part time positions available because this is one of the fastest growing occupations in the US. In addition, the employment is very favorable for this profession and it offers a well paid job.

Some disadvantages can manifest postural problems and back pain because of its working condition in a dental office. This is also a result of monotonous routine and can lead to a carpal tunnel syndrome. Another disadvantage is that because of its flexible schedule and most of the time the jobs are part-time, dental hygienists has a hard time getting good benefits.

A dental hygienists work may vary depending on the education that they were able to acquire but regardless, a career as a dental hygienist is one of fastest growing at the present, and an this is an exciting time to pursue it if you have a passion for helping others and flexible hours and pay.

If you are currently thinking of being a Dentist but is hesitant on having the real hands on experience, then you might want to consider some Dental hygienist colleges. Dental hygienists assist dentists in procedures that will assess and diagnose the patient. They also help in planning an implementation of treatment for the patient.

Some Dental Hygienist colleges’ programs can take as short as 2 years with an associate degree. However, it is always much better to finish a 4-year degree at a college or university as most of the Dentists will only care if you have a license or if you are skillful enough for the job. You also need to weigh your options in going to Dental Hygienist colleges as it is not a practical long term career.

Usually the requirement for you to enroll in Dental Hygienist colleges is to pass the entrance exam and to acquire a slot for admission on their dental hygiene program. The programs included in a such a school are more likely to incorporate laboratory and clinical classroom setting that is necessary in a Dentist’s office. You should also consider enrolling in a Dental Hygienist school that is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).

There are also some institutions that offers scholarship grant on students of a Dental Hygienist school. You may want to check online as well or to get some referral from friends who might currently be in a dental school and might help get a scholarship for you. As soon as you apply and get qualified, you can now enjoy a dental hygienist career without thinking about your monetary capability to pay for your tuition fee, and other pre-requisites that unlike before may put a financial burden on you.

In various countries, there are different licensing requirements for Dental Hygienist colleges. But in the United States, you should be a graduate from an accredited Dental Hygienist school by the American Dental Association. You should also qualify for the clinical board exams before you can attain your license and one must undergo a painstaking training.

If you are still skeptical of going to Dental Hygienist colleges, then you need to think about other possibilities. You can hit two birds with one stone if you consider a 4 year degree in a Dental Hygienist school. If you change your mind about becoming a dentist then you can have a quick exit point with the Dental Hygienist degree because of its similarity with a Dental School. Aside from that, for a 2 year degree in Dental Hygienist colleges you can complete the program sooner than you think and you will be much closer to your goal.

A survey was conducted by the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA), amongst dental hygienists to check on their wages and benefits. About half of those who answered the surveyed said that they were receiving some form of employment benefits, these includes, paid vacations, sick leaves, retirement plans, among others. The survey suggests that working as a dental hygienist not only make you an advocate of oral health, but it gives you the benefits of a regular employee who works in a corporate setting. Dental hygienists earn much from their work communicating with patients.

In 2004, the norm for an hourly dental hygienist wage was about $30.19. It increased in 2008, as it was reported in May 200 that year, dental hygienist make a living of around $66 thousand a year. While some may have had lower wages (some reportedly had an annual income of about $44,180), some dental hygienists even reported a higher salary earned between $55,220 and $78, 990. The highest ten percent dental hygienists earners for that year reportedly earned around $91,470.

In Canada, the hourly wage of dental hygienists is from $32 an hour to $ 55 hour. The rates differ due to geographical location and employment settings. A dental hygienists working n the city may earn more than that of a dental hygienist working in the suburbs, as they city may attract more clients. Dental hygienists’ wages may see no movement or even a slump due to the high number of graduates from dental hygiene schools. Even though the high demand for dental hygienists continues, there seems to be a superfluous of graduates.

Dental hygienists’ wages may be affected by different factors, some of them maybe geographical location, experience, year on the job and employment setting. A report coming from the US Department of Labor connotes that about 96 percent of dental hygienist work in a private clinic. Some dental hygienists work on part time basis, others on full time, while some prefer to be on call, some maybe working during the evening or even during the weekends.

Dental hygienist wages, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics may vary. They may be paid on hourly, daily, salary or even commission basis.

The work that one chooses would indicate the lifestyle that one would lead. The work would result in how much one would get from salaries, bonuses and benefits. Working in the dental field would allow the middle class to have a very at ease and satisfying lifestyle, particularly if he or she is single. Dental hygienists’ wages and benefits are very satisfactory.

Most of the Dental Hygienists usually works part time and has flexible hours which may sound interesting for someone who is on the same profession. For a dental hygienist pay and hours it depends if you are working part time or working at more than one dental office. It also depends on the number of years you have been working and your education.

According to PayScale, a dental hygienist pay and hours ranges from $31, 691 to $84, 457 every month and it also depends on the gender and years of experience of a dental hygienist.

For a female dental hygienist pay and hours, ranges from $25.78 to $36.27 while a male dental hygienist pay and hours ranges from $20.00 to $38.49. This is quite a contrary for what the usual pay that these different genders earn for other jobs. Probably the reason is because some dentists prefer female dental hygienists in assisting their patients.

For the years of experience, a dental hygienist’s pay and hours varies as well. A dental hygienist working more than a year may earn 39% of the pay scale compared to a dental hygienist who is working less than a year. Like any other job, a working experience is very important and some of the employers would want to have someone who is very knowledgeable of the job already.

For popular companies and industries, a Family Dental office provides more than the other industries ranging $23.55 – $35.00 per hour.

Dental hygienist pay and hours are given per week while some other work is on a part-time or on a commission based setting. So the usual schedule is flexible for most of the dental hygienist.

You have to keep in mind that dental hygienist pay and hours depend on each other. This means that a dental hygienist makes the most of his or her earnings. And most of the industries who hire them only offers a part-time job and if a dental hygienist wants to work fulltime for just one office then the earnings will differ as well because working for only one office might not be that much as what you would earn part-time working with various offices.

Dental hygienist pay and hours will vary depending on your own strategy. You may earn a lot by getting a lot of part time jobs and by scouting for different companies that you would want to work with. At the same time, you should also check on the some other possibilities of other careers in line with being a dental hygienist that may suffice your needs.

There are a lot of dental hygienists positions being presented to those who have finished the Dental hygiene programs. Currently, the dental hygienists position is one of the most secure in today’s rocky market. You can choose from being a clinician, assisting the dentist and the orthodontist, to someone who manages and administers the clinic, and to a teacher. There is a wide array of dental hygienists positions.

The most frequent dental hygienists position is within the dental clinic. The US Department of Labor gives data that about 96 per cent of dental hygienists works within a dental clinic. You can secure this job though completing dental hygienist program from an accredited school. If you chose to remain in the clinic, you must expect to assess the patient and do dental hygiene diagnosis and evaluation. Dental hygienists do a review of the patients’ medical history.

Dental hygienists know how to do oral prophylaxis, this means they know how to clean the teeth, remove the tartar, plaque and other stains. They counsel patients on proper tooth care and advise them on proper ways of cleaning. Dental hygienists also administer dental exams, assisting dentists and doctors. They also take required exams on the patients such as the x-ray, which is why dental hygienists have a background in radiology. During the x-ray procedure, dental hygienists wear certain protective masks or goggles. Moreover, Dental hygienists also assist the doctor by assessing the patients’ mouth and help pin down certain problems of the patient. Nevertheless the treatment is still to be done by the doctor. Oftentimes, the dental hygienist also administers office work around a dental clinic.

Some dental hygienists positions would require you to work on weekends and even on holidays. Some positions however, would be benefiting to your time as it would not be fulltime work, some dentists would only call for a part-time dental hygienists. These are the jobs expected of dental hygienists in their position. If you decide how ever to become a teacher, you must full on be ready to share the knowledge that you have learned from school. It would be better if you have first gotten your license and gained experienced from a dental clinic before going into the field of the academe. Apart from being a teacher, remember that you are as well an advocate of oral health.

Dental hygienists positions earn well usually. Whatever dental position you might choose, treat your patients or students well.

There is a lot of information regarding dental hygienist schools scattered throughout the internet. A person who wants a career as a dental hygienist can research about the schools offering the course online. There are even schools which offer the course online. Research, however, must be done before enrolling in such courses as they may not be licensed to teach the course.

Usual requirements in getting admitted to dental hygienist schools include a high school diploma. Some may even have grade requirements in some high school subjects such as English, math, biology, and chemistry as these subjects are very much needed in understanding the dental hygienist course. Passing the entrance exam administered by these dental hygienist schools is also necessary.

Most dental hygienist schools often teach their students such subjects as speech, psychology, biology, nutrition, physiology, pharmacology, clinical dental hygiene, tissue structure (histology), English, chemistry, sociology, anatomy, radiology, gum disease (periodontology), and microbiology. These subjects are often incorporated in laboratory and clinical lectures, and classroom lectures as well. The above subjects are necessary foundations to the practice of a dental hygienist.

To become a successful dental hygienist, an individual must first complete the dental hygiene program offered at any of the various dental hygienist schools. The program is normally a two-year associate’s degree although there are schools which offer a four-year bachelor’s degree. A two-year course, however, is enough for private dental practice. The dental hygienist course is typically taught in technical schools and community colleges.

The need for dental hygienists is continuously growing thus there is a need to fill up those vacancies. A dental hygienist is tasked to remove tartar and plaque from the patient’s teeth. He/she is also tasked to apply cavity prevention treatments and to teach proper dental hygiene to patients. He/she can also take the teeth’s x-ray and inspect gums and teeth for any abnormality. He/she is often seen assisting the dentist in any dental procedure. By enrolling in any of the dental hygienist schools, the student can learn how he/she can perform the above tasks and responsibilities of a dental hygienist.

A student can also learn how to administer local anesthesia from these dental hygienist schools. He/she also learn how to remove sutures, and perform laboratory tests for presentation to the dentist for analysis. He/she can also learn how to place temporary fillings, and polish and smooth dental work. But these tasks may not be done by the dental hygienist if certain laws prevent him/her from performing such tasks and responsibilities.

Dental hygienist schools can provide the necessary training in the practice of a dental hygienist and as such a person who wants to go into this field must choose very well the school where he/she would want to learn from.

After finishing the two-year associate’s degree on dental hygiene and after passing the licensure examination for dental hygienist, an individual must search for available dental hygienist jobs. There are various sources of information on where one can find dental hygienist jobs. The local chapter of the national dental association or the national dental hygienist association can be a very good source of information. These organizations can refer one to their members who are need of a dental hygienist.

Dental hygienist jobs can also be found in the classified ads sections of the newspapers. Most dental offices advertise in these newspapers for openings for the dental hygienist positions. Some of these dental clinics may require one to move residences as most successful dental clinics are concentrated in highly urbanized cities. In some instances, like openings for dental hygienist positions in non-profit organizations, one may require to move to less urbanized or rural areas to service the poor patients.

With the popularity of the internet, dental hygienist jobs are also posted in websites offering job placements. Websites of large dental clinics also post their open positions for dental hygienist. There may also be international openings for dental hygienists which are also found in the internet. A dental hygienist looking for a job through the internet can use the keywords “dental hygienist jobs”. The search engine will then show hundreds of websites with such keywords on their web pages. From there, the dental hygienist can go through each website to find the kind of job he/she is looking for.

Dental hygienists typically require a two-year associate’s degree on dental hygiene which can be earned in technical schools, community colleges, or in online schools. Although there are schools offering a four-year bachelor’s degree on dental hygiene, an associate’s degree would suffice to be able to practice as a dental hygienist. After completing the degree, the individual is required to take the licensure examination for dental hygienists. Only after passing the said examination can one practice as a dental hygienist.

There are also dental hygienist jobs for those individuals holding a master’s degree on dental hygiene. Finishing the two-year master’s degree on dental hygiene can qualify one to managerial or educational positions. The requirement for master’s degree is for one to finish the preliminary certification such as finishing the associate’s or bachelor’s degree and passing the licensure exams for dental hygienists. Dental hygienist jobs as instructors are also available for those with master’s degrees but no teaching experience.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS), Dental Hygienist Employment is expected to have a growth rate of about thirty six percent by the year 2018. The demand for dental hygienists is rather high as the expectancy of the BLS for dental care and use of dental hygienists are greater than the average. The BLS report shows a great future for dental hygienists rather than other occupations. The prediction of the BLS is with fact as there has already been a rise in numbers for dental hygienists in the previous years.

In 2001, In Ontario, Canada, the dental hygienists’ employment rate was a whopping 91 percent; this data is according Regency Dental Hygiene Academy, one of Canada’s top dental hygienists schools. In 2004, (BLS) reported that there were total of 158,000 dental hygienists jobs, fifty percent of which is part time. And, in 2008 there were a report of about 172,100 jobs of dental hygienists—a great number for someone who assists dentists, cleans teeth, conducts x-ray exams and applies cavity treatment. According to the US Department of Labor about 96 percent of dental hygienists are employed mostly by dentist in their own private practice. Oftentimes, high employment rate would be based on geographical location, employment setting, and years of experience.

According to the BLS, job prospects for dental hygienists employment would be encouraging in most areas of the United States. However, it would all depend still on geographical location. One factor that could get in the way of dental hygienist employment is that some states may not allow graduates which to practice unless they have licenses in that certain area. Another factor that could get in the way of the increase in dental hygienists employment is the ongoing battle in the economic market. This is probably the cause of the resulting lethargic numbers of dental graduates, who would serve as future employers for dental hygienists.

Nevertheless the BLS projects a great future ahead for dental hygienists employment; this according to the BLS is all “due to population growth, greater retention of natural teeth and a growing emphasis on preventative dental care.” With today’s society becoming more aware of their cleanliness and hygiene, and so rises the demand for health and hygiene, dental care included. The numbers state a fact that the industry of dental care, more specifically dental hygiene employment, is not going to be shaky amidst the uncertain economy.
